So I lost my job at 7-11 recently
7-11. Now I know what you're thinking how could you work for a company that turns a presidential election into a horse... er...
coffee race?. The answer is, its hard to find a job when you are an unskilled worker, and/or someone who has half of an English Literature degree.
Technically it was my choice to leave 7-11. According to company policy if you slip-up during an alchohol sting you are fired. That I don't mind I messed up (I swear I was not in the habit of selling alchohol to minors). It wouldn't have bothered me if they had just fired my according to their
OWN company regulations, but instead they chose to suspend me and then offer me my job back.
Let me just reiterate that I was not in the habit of selling alchohol to minors and in a way I think of the sting as the "exception that proves the rule." In fact I would go so far as to say that this was the
ONLY instance in which I failed in my duty as a purveyor of age-restricted items.
But the point is not that I
DIDN'T deserve to be fired but that I
did. You see 7-11 has an extremely high turnover rate, so if you are a good employee they don't want to let you go. They were willing to break their own rules to keep me aboard.
Hey, maybe I should consider this an example of an employee friendly corporation showing an attitude of forgiveness, but I think of it more as a company using a "good cop/ bad cop" routine to keep its employees in line. What should I expect?
So I was out of a job for 2 weeks, but I found one relatively quickly.... Grassroots canvassing!!! I wouldn't want to go too far into detail as to what goes on on the street, but suffice it to say I was slightly disillusioned with the whole thing. I thought the canvassers would be a bunch of incredibly selfless and dedicated people and they're not BAD, but I at least was amazed by the cynicism of some of the people there. I guess its not all limon popsicles from the Zacatecas popsicle plant.
On the other hand they do good work, but the job can be rather thankless. I guess I can see why some Democrats say that the party needs to divert its resources from grassroots fundraising into media campaigns.
This is my first diary I would really appreciate any suggestions you have.
